The Adventures of the Calico Cat: Episode 2 - Bella Meets Bird

Bella's Comfort

Bella has found a great place to relax. She is on the couch with many pillows. She also likes to sleep on the back of my lounge chair with her legs sprawled out and with one paw in my hair.

Bella was born on January 24,2020, near guess of birth date by a veterinarian. The zodiac sign is Aquarius and describes Bella's personality completely. She is a free spirit and can be a bit rebellious.

Calico cats are also known as more feisty and have more attitude than other breeds. Pet owners have referred to their Calico cats as having a…catitured! Calico cats have been known to challenge their pet parents as well as anyone that gets their fur up!. There actually has been a study of calico cats which documented this fact. A Google search will give more information.

Bella, my calico cat, has trained me to buy the only cat food she likes. I tried many, but only a science diet will do and forget the toys I bought her. She only likes the triangle stuffed piece of cloth and a black mouse that came from the shelter with her.

Sue's Visit

My daughter Sue is coming for a few days’ visit now that Bella has settled in. It was a warm summer evening as I sat waiting on my patio for my daughter to arrive. Bella was sitting by the screen door looking out, just waiting for a chance to escape. I had a pitcher of lemonade in an ice bucket to stay cold. I made Sue’s favorite appetizer, a fig stuffed with goat cheese with thin prosciutto wrapped around it.

After Sue arrived she opened the back car door for her dog Bailey to come out. Bailey came running to greet me with kisses and a big smile. Bailey’s smile scares most people. They think she is being aggressive because she bares her teeth. But Bailey is a very loving - black and white Border Collie.

Next to reach the patio are Sue and Brooklyn, her pet pigeon. After greetings and hugs Sue let Brooklyn out of his cage. Brooklyn Is a fancy pigeon with a little white hood covering the back of his head. Oh yes, the bird wears diapers!

We settled on the patio, now enjoying lemonade and snacks. The evening was cooling off. I had put  on a quilted vest and now I was going inside to get Sue a sweater. Just as I opened the door Brooklyn flew onto my back. I didn't think anything of it. He often flew on my back or head. I walked into the front room, felt a heavy thud and four paws with claws sticking into my back. At the same time the bird scrambled to the top of my head.

What Happens Next!

I’m grabbing at my vest and pulling it off my arms trying to shake the cat off. She wouldn't let go! Sue was sitting on the patio laughing. Finally I got out of my vest with the cat holding on and dumped them both onto the floor. I ran into my bedroom and shut the door. Brooklyn flew up to  the bed headboard.  I sat on the bed until my heart stopped fibrillating all the while thinking:

Oh my gosh! How could I forget about Bella?  Now we have a problem, Bella would definitely get the bird. Sue and I need to talk. She had told me before her cat Gilbert had never bothered the bird. I remember my other cat Ozzie wanted to be friends with it. I told Sue that Bella was different and she  would take him down in a minute. Her response was, “Oh Mom you worry too much. Let them work it out.”

I walked out to the patio and asked Sue if she still wanted Bella and Brooklyn to work it out? In my view, the solution would be to put Brooklyn in his cage. Unfortunately Brooklyn hates being in the cage. Sue’s response was to say he has been part of the family for two years and is not used to being caged.

Brooklyn has been with Sue since the day he poked his bald head out of his shell. She is very attached to him. He was allowed to explore any place he chose. I’m fine with it except when he goes into my bedroom and onto my bed. When Brooklyn visits and I'm ready to go to my bedroom at night, I make a mad dash for the door before he can follow me!

Sue comes to visit about once a month. She lives in Manhattan and has no one to watch Bailey  and Brooklyn when she visits so both of them have to accompany Sue on her trips.

Now we have a conundrum!  Brooklyn and Bella are the problem. Can a bird and a cat cohabitate together?

Read the next story to find out?.

Until we meet again!
